The Transit Engineer 1 or 2 position includes a combination of project management and leadership responsibilities for short-term and long-term projects as well as day to day operational technical support. This employee will monitor and direct activities of consultants, contractors, and manufacturers while managing activities of their own projects, planning and design functions. This employee will also provide real time data and reports as requested by Metro Transit Management. This position reports to the Transit Chief Maintenance Officer.
Employees may be eligible for loan forgiveness through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
The successful candidate will be hired as a Transit Engineer 1 or 2 level based on qualifications, and the level will be determined at the time of hire. Starting salary for the Transit Engineer 1 is $79,433.64. Starting salary for the Transit Engineer 2 is $86,834.28.
Progression to a Transit Engineer 2 is not automatic but is dependent upon the employee taking on additional duties and responsibilities, as well as the independent application of professional judgment.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
Transit Engineer 1
Program Management
- Manage programs, including but not limited to, battery electric buses, charging systems, on-bus technology and safety systems for Metro Transit
- Research new technologies, evaluate impact and make recommendations. Analyze existing propulsion systems, evaluate impact and make recommendations.
- Research supporting needs for fleet technology, evaluate impact and make recommendations. Research Fleet Technology integration and recommendations.
- Take part in preproduction meetings to verify that the vendors understand the specification and agrees to follow them.
- Create or help to create milestones for vendors to accomplish to ensure that projects stay on track.
- Ensure that buses and systems are delivered as specified. Ensure that implementation processes are followed and adjusted to better support the mission.
- Stays current with Electric Vehicle market trends and maintenance needs. Helps develop activities and strategies, including approaches to changing out fleet.
- Lead the design, development, testing, and deployment of EV charging systems, including chargers, switchboards, and other related infrastructure.
Electric Vehicle Network Management
- Work with vendors to ensure that Depot and On-route chargers work as designed. Work with the garages and transportation to ensure that Depot and On-route chargers are operated correctly
- Conduct failure analysis and recommend improvements. Compare energy cost by propulsion
- Collaborate with internal and external teams to execute testing, troubleshooting, commissioning, and operationalizing new Electric Vehicle equipment.
- Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues impacting the Electric charging network.
- Quickly, effectively, and candidly frame-up and escalate business risks/opportunities to senior leadership.
Develop Reports
- Develop and maintain models to ensure vehicle range, energy consumption and emissions profiles meet the goals of Metro Transit
- Provide plain language descriptions of transit-specific language so strategic plans and ‘definitions of success’ like performance measures are easily understood by staff and public alike
- Draft reports and public messages for website to describe strategic planning efforts, high-level descriptions of progress
- Write monthly summaries that highlight best examples of progress for internal communication.
Perform related work as assigned.
Transit Engineer 2
- All the duties of Transit Engineer 1 with a higher degree of judgment, discretion, and initiative.
- Manage the interface with utilities, coordinating energy supply requirement, and ensure adherence to all regulatory standards.
- Oversee the development of electrical schematics, diagrams, and layouts related to charging infrastructure, promoting seamless integration with mechanical and software systems.
- Prepare and review/modify contract scopes of work, review proposals, recommend contract execution and administer contracts.
- Provide quality assurance and quality control oversight for contracts.
- Develop technical specifications, testing programs, procedures, and standards for Metro Transit's advanced bus technology project activities.
Perform related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical or other related engineering field
- Three (3) years of experience with vehicle design or manufacturing, high-voltage electrical systems or charging systems, advanced vehicle technology systems, or related field
- One (1) year of which needs to include project management and computer experience related to the duties
OR
- Associate's degree in automotive technology, engineering technology or related field
- Five (5) years of experience with vehicle design or manufacturing, high-voltage electrical systems or charging systems, advanced vehicle technology systems, or related field
- One (1) year of which needs to include project management and computer experience related to the duties
OR
- Seven (7) years of experience with vehicle design or manufacturing, high-voltage electrical systems or charging systems, advanced vehicle technology systems, or related field
- One (1) year of which needs to include project task management and computer experience related to the duties
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid drivers license
Work in this position is primarily performed in an office environment. However, the employee will be expected to physically access all areas of the Metro Transit facilities, board a variety of buses, and traverse construction sites.
Employees may be expected to work or attend meetings during the evening or on weekends as necessary and occasionally travel. This employee will work on-site. It is not a remote employment position.
